Set to start on 2018 stage of renewal

Preliminary on-ground work on the next stage of the City Centre Renewal will start on Monday, January 29.

“We’re approaching a significant moment in Liebig Street’s history as we seek to upgrade the section of the street that contains our unique dining precinct along with independent retailers and professional services,” Mayor Cr Robert Anderson said.

“We’ve received really positive feedback on the work delivered in the central and northern blocks of Liebig Street and look forward to bringing a similar standard of finish to the section between Timor and Koroit streets.

“The preliminary work will include some minor excavation as we investigate the underground infrastructure including power, drainage and telecommunication services.”

Major work, including demolition of old road paving and footpaths will start on Monday, February 5 at the Koroit Street end of the block.

“From February 5 we expect to have traffic management in place and we ask motorists to check the signs and drive accordingly,” Cr Anderson said.

“All the businesses will be trading as normal during the construction period so please continue to support your favourite businesses and the families behind them.

“We’re encouraging motorists to consider parking in Ozone Car Park, which offers free 90-minute parking, or Cramond and Dickson Car Park.

“Both of these off-street car parks provide easy access to Liebig Street and of course all off-street car parks provide free parking at weekends.

“On-street parking in the southern block, which has a one-hour limit, will be free while the renewal is under way.”

The renewal will be delivered in two parts. The north section of the block will be done first with the remaining southern section to follow.

“We had a lot of talks with traders to ascertain which way they would prefer to see the work staged,” Cr Anderson said.

“Most traders indicated they wanted to see the work done in two stages, starting with the northern section of the block.”
