Warrnambool City Council is a finalist in the 2019 Smart Cities Awards.

Council has been recognised for its work on investigating hydrogen as a renewable energy source and establishing a relationship with the Swedish regional city of Mariestad, which is using hydrogen to power vehicles and heat buildings.

Award winners will be announced on October 31 during Smart Cities Week Australia.

Council is also a finalist in two categories of the Economic Development Australia (EDA) Awards for its City Centre Business Support and the China Host programs.

The Business Support Program included business mentoring sessions, competitions and promotions while the China Host program helped better prepare business operators in the Great Ocean Road region engage with the Chinese market.

“This is great news for Council and for Warrnambool and of course it’s always a boost to have your work independently acknowledged,” Warrnambool Mayor Cr Tony Herbert said.

“More importantly though, these projects were about positioning Warrnambool to continue to be prosperous and relevant as economies, technologies and expectations change.

“They also reflect the requirement for local government to be active and innovative when it comes to economic development.”

The National Economic Development Awards for Excellence includes 12 categories which honour organisations and individuals for their efforts in driving economic growth, facilitating partnerships, implementing innovative solutions to challenges and improving local communities.
“We had a record number of entries this year so to be named a finalist amongst such fierce competition is a considerable achievement,” EDA Chief Executive Officer Jacqueline Brinkman said.

“The National Economic Development Awards for Excellence are a wonderful opportunity to recognise those teams and individuals around Australia implementing innovative tactics to drive economic prosperity within their communities.”

Economic Development Australia is a nationally recognised network of economic development professionals, fostering prosperity in communities across Australia. Its mission is to build capacity, promote excellence and providing leadership for economic development professionals.
