Solstice Searching

Two nights of neon fun for Warrnambool

News Article Date:
Tuesday, 16 June 2020

Celebrate the Winter Solstice by joining in a city-wide scavenger hunt on June 19 and 20.

Follow the clues to find eight brilliant neon sculptures at some of Warrnambool’s most iconic locations.

The hunt has been designed so participants don’t need to leave their vehicle to enjoy it, and anyone who finds all eight sculptures can enter the draw to win one of two $100 gift vouchers to the local business of their choice.

The sculptures were made by visual artist Carla O’Brien, whose neon artworks have been showcased at the White Night festivals in Melbourne and Ballarat as well as the Burning Man Festival in the United States.

“Normally people are encouraged to interact with my work, but when Council said they were thinking of doing a scavenger hunt, I thought it was the perfect way for people to still get out and have fun right now,” Ms O’Brien said.

“I love the element of surprise that they’ll get to a certain spot and not know what they’re going to see, and the pure excitement of finding the neon artworks.

“I think there’ll be a lot of fun and laughter had by the people in their cars.”

Warrnambool Mayor Tony Herbert said that the event offered a new activity for families to enjoy together.

“The hunt will take you on a tour of some of Warrnambool’s best spots. Sometimes as locals we can forget just how incredible some of these places are, so it will be the perfect excuse to be a tourist in your own town for the night,” he said.

“I’d like to congratulate our Events Team for coming up with such an interesting concept that allows people to have fun and explore the city while maintaining a safe social distance.

“And speaking of safety, if you’re the driver, make sure that you keep your eyes on the road and park your car if you want to have a good look at the neon sculptures.”

The sculptures will be lit up from 5pm until approximately 8pm each night.

The clues will be posted on the “Solstice Searching” Facebook event as well as

To enter the prize draw, email events [at] warrnambool [dot] vic [dot] gov [dot] au with the location of all eight sculptures. The first two randomly drawn entries with the correct locations will win.

Everyone is encouraged to use the hashtags #solsticesearching,   #iamwarrnambool and #getaroundwarrnambool in their social media posts.

To keep this event fun and safe for everyone, please avoid touching the installations or leaving your car. Please abide by current regulations, which can be found at
