There are a number of things you need to do to be a responsible pet owner, from picking up after your pet, providing it with healthy meals and ensuring it gets plenty of exercise.
The other hallmark of good pet owners is ensuring their four-legged friend is properly registered.
All cat and dog registrations are due for renewal on April 10.
The Domestic Animals Act states a dog or cat must be registered at three months of age and if this is the first time they have been registered, they need to be microchipped first.
It is important to remember that having your pet microchipped is not the same as having it registered. Registration needs to be paid annually.
Warrnambool City Council Local Laws Coordinator Peter McArdle said that having your pets registration up to date is not only the law, it helps reunite lost animals with their humans.
“Without the most up-to-date information, finding the owners of lost dogs can be much more complex than it needs to be,” he said.
“Registration fees assist with promotion of responsible pet ownership, walking paths, enclosures, off lead areas and pound facilities.”
