New Year's Eve fireworks at the breakwater

News Article Date:
Saturday, 29 December 2018

Follow a successful trial last year, the 9.30pm and midnight fireworks on New Year’s Eve will once again be launched from the Warrnambool breakwater.

An increase in firepower meant that the display needed to be moved from its traditional location at Flagstaff Hill, with the new format warmly received by the majority of people.

Warrnambool City Council Manager Visitor Economy David McMahon said that the new location made the fireworks more visible while also providing enough space for one of the most spectacular displays in regional Victoria.

“We really stepped things up last year with the intensity and duration of the displays, and the 15,000 visitors to Warrnambool plus all of our residents can expect two more stunning fireworks shows on New Year’s Eve,” he said.

“There are plenty of fantastic vantage points to enjoy the fireworks.

“Cannon Hill, Thunder Point, Point Ritchie, and the surf club would all be excellent spots, though anywhere you can see the breakwater would also be great.

“We’d recommend that everyone avoid Viaduct Road and the breakwater itself as these will be very congested on New Year’s Eve.”

Mr McMahon said that for families especially, the best place to enjoy New Year’s Eve is Flagstaff Hill.

“Bring a picnic or enjoy dinner from one of the on-site food vendors,” he said.

“There’ll be children’s activities, cannon firing, live music and a great view of the 9.30pm fireworks.

“This is a ticketed event and it’s always very popular, so please book.”
