Meet Rylan Miller and Bernice Clarke, the two faces of Warrnambool’s largest ever piece of public art.

The pair was selected by artist Adnate to be the subjects of his Nganatwarr (Welcome) mural.

The mural incorporates information detailing significant cultural sites and narratives of the Gunditjmara and Great South Coast region.

Rylan, 8, said that the mural was “very cool”.

“It’s good to be representing young people,” he said.

“It’s not just my face up there, it’s all indigenous people.

“I’m not just representing the indigenous community, I’m representing Australia too.”

Both subjects were pleasantly surprised to be featured.

Rylan had watched Adnate at work every day, with the artist only con rming on day three that he was using a photo of Rylan as inspiration.

Bernice didn’t know until even later.

“I had no idea it was me until 11 o’clock on Tuesday (day four),” she said.

“It’s quite amazing. Matt (Adnate) is a wonderful artist.

“It’s wonderful that this artwork is in such a prominent position.”

It took four days to complete the Nganatwarr mural.

The project was led by a steering group consisting of Leadership Great South Coast, Warrnambool Art Gallery, the F Project, Gunditjmara Aboriginal Cooperative and South West TAFE.

Funding for the mural has been made possible through seed funding from the Hugh Williamson Foundation (Bug Blitz) and through contributions from the Victorian Government’s Community Crime Prevention Program, Gunditjmara Aboriginal Cooperative and the Isobel and David Jones Family Foundation.
