Mental health check in for youth

News Article Date:
Thursday, 20 August 2020

The Warrnambool Youth Council needs your help with the Community Mental Health Check In.

The Community Mental Health Check In aims to get Warrnambool talking about the things we can all do to support mental health through these challenging times.

This project builds on the Youth Council’s 2018 work with psychologist Jodie Fleming (The Psychology of IT) and designer Sinead Murphy (Lovelock Studios) in which they created a campaign to promote ways of supporting biopsychosocial health.

You might be familiar with the colourful posters themed: Be Social, Be Playful, Be Kind, Be Yourself, and Just Be.

The Youth Council recognises that a lot has changed since those images were created and they’re putting the call out to the Warrnambool community to find out how people have adapted to these times – what does it mean to be Social and Playful now? How are people finding ways to Be Kind, to Be Themselves, or to Just be?

How you can help

It’s pretty straight forward. Head to Survey Monkey to complete a questionnaire:

You can also upload a picture or video to Instagram with your top tips for staying Social, Playful, Kind, Yourself, & Just Be-ing in 2020. Use the hashtag #3280MentalHealthCheckIn and tag @warrnamboolcityyouth

People who get involved go into the draw to win: a $100 voucher to the local business of their choice OR if they are 25 & under they’ll go into the draw to win 1 of 6 $50 vouchers to the local business of their choice!

The information collected through Community Mental Health Check In will be used to create some really special resources that aim to support the social and emotional wellbeing of young people and other community members:

2020 Mental Health Checklist – this checklist will be compiled using ideas and information sourced through the Mental Health Check In. A hard copy will be printed and distributed to each primary and secondary school student in Warrnambool. A digital copy will be available for free download on the W2040 website.

2020 Mental Health Tools – professional development workshop with resources and tools for school health and wellbeing teams working to support young people through the impacts of Covid-19 and other challenges. This workshop will be delivered by The Psychology of IT’s Dr Jodie Fleming and will be provided free of charge to Warrnambool schools through this project.

2020 Mental Health Poster Launch – a new series of updated posters will be launched that celebrate the ways we can Be Social, Be Playful, Be Kind, Be Yourself, and Just Be in the time of our “new normal”.

This Warrnambool Youth Council project is delivered in partnership with W2040 and supported by Beyond the Bell.
