Concept designs for the new $20.25 million learning and library hub at South West TAFE’s Warrnambool campus have been released, offering community members a glimpse of what the stunning new building is expected to look like, thanks to the Victorian Government.

Earlier this month Minister for Higher Education Gayle Tierney released the concept drawings for the ultra-modern facility, which is a joint project between the Department of Education and Training, South West TAFE and Warrnambool City Council.

The new hub in the heart of Warrnambool will be open to the community and offers more than four times the floor area of the current library.

The learning and library hub will include a modern indoor-outdoor café, public computers, exhibition and display areas, places to study, meeting rooms, and a games and digital media zone. The top floor will offer a quiet reading area with views across Lake Pertobe to the ocean.

“This will be an iconic building and one that all the Warrnambool community will be able to access. As a substantial capital works project, it will also be an important economic stimulus for the region as the economy recovers from the effects of the pandemic,” Ms Tierney said.

“The community provided clear direction on the features the new library would need, and we will meet those expectations. This new building will resolve accessibility, space and amenity issues.”

Kosloff Architecture is designing the new facilities. The project includes the refurbishment of an existing heritage-listed building on the campus. A builder is expected to be appointed in April 2021. Completion and opening of the new hub is expected in mid-2022.

“I’m thrilled to see the design for this wonderful project coming to fruition,“ project group member Cr Kylie Gaston said.

“Importantly, the new library will have more books – a key priority of the community.

“The concept design sits comfortably within the TAFE campus’s current mix of heritage and modern buildings.”
