Five Great South Coast municipalities in partnership with peak football, netball and cricket bodies are investigating sporting infrastructure and development needs across the region.

The Warrnambool, Moyne, Corangamite, Southern Grampians and Glenelg municipalities and the AFL Western District Commission, AFL Victoria, Cricket Victoria and Netball Victoria will develop the Great South Coast Regional AFL, Cricket and Netball Strategy to support the sustainability and development of the three major sports.

“The partnership will find out what the current and future needs are of each community and use that as a foundation for the strategy,” Manager Warrnambool City Council Recreation and Culture, Russell Lineham said.

“Across the study area there are 102 sportsgrounds and five indoor netball facilities.

“All the partnership members are committed to building stronger communities and we know that sport has a critical role to play in strengthening communities, particularly in regional Victoria.”

Great South Coast cricket, football and netball communities are being asked to be involved in the strategy development and have a chance to take part in stakeholder workshops in September and October.

“We want to grow the ‘big three’ sports sustainably and looking at the infrastructure requirements of each is a part of the process,” Mr Lineham said.

The project will look at whether existing infrastructure is meeting the needs of communities and whether there will need to be an expansion or consolidation of facilities.

“There is strong competition for funding between sporting codes and projected increases in participation in some areas must be balanced against planning for potential population decline and supporting the sustainability of sport in other areas.”

It is proposed that a draft strategy will be developed in early 2018.
