Allansford provides feedback on roads

Members of the Allansford community provided Warrnambool City Council (WCC) with important feedback on transport options at a community meeting on December 15.

High on the list of community priorities raised at the meeting was the re-opening of the Ziegler Parade Bridge over the Hopkins River for car traffic.

The bridge over the Hopkins River was closed in September as a precautionary measure after high water levels and flood debris placed the structure under considerable pressure.

A post-flood investigation revealed no new structural damage but did identify deterioration of existing structural issues and that safety issues with the bridge railing would result in the bridge remaining closed until these issues were addressed.

The bridge could be re-opened to vehicles under 14 tonnes with an investment of $110,000 for temporary barriers and a further $40,000 for chicanes to narrow the lane width and reduce traffic speed across the bridge.

There was a call for VicRoads to introduce speed restrictions along the Princes Highway.

The community was also keen to see improvements at the intersection of the highway and Garabaldi Lane, including pavement renewal and surfacing work, and a road design that allows vehicles to enter and exit highway traffic more safely.

“While the speed limit and the Garabaldi intersection are managed by VicRoads, Council is keen to work with VicRoads to address some of the challenges around the Princes Highway,” WCC Director City Infrastructure Scott Cavanagh said.

The 14-tonne weight limit was applied to the Ziegler Parade Bridge in 2012.

An engineering assessment has indicated that it is unlikely the existing bridge would be able to operate without a load restriction.

Crs Michael Neoh and Robert Anderson also attending last night’s meeting, which was organised by Warrnambool City Council.
