$450,000 for Warrnambool via Pick My Project

Three Warrnambool projects have been successfully funded by the Victorian Government’s Pick My Project Initiative.

A revamp of the old quarry at the Warrnambool Community Garden, a natural play space at the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens and Jimmi Buscombe’s street art project “#WildvsWarrnambool” have all received the green light.

$30 million was allocated to 237 projects in Victoria, with the winning projects chosen by a public vote.

The quarry at the Community Garden received $194,000 to make the most of the natural amphitheatre for performances, markets and community events, as well as plant a rainforest gully on its southern edge, create a viewing platform and a path around the quarry perimeter.

The Botanic Gardens play space received $198,000 in funding and will be located on the northern side of the gardens near the lake. It will feature a series of engaging, natural play elements which fit into the heritage listed gardens. A large cypress stump and the remains of a historic tree will be incorporated into the design, becoming play pieces.

#WildvsWarrnambool will see local artist Jimmi Buscombe create four new artworks at high-traffic, yet unattractive locations. The murals will depict native wildlife “taking over” the space, with the artworks unfolding in stages, encouraging repeat visits to see what will happen next.

Warrnambool Mayor Robert Anderson said that the Victorian Government’s investment in the Warrnambool community is a welcome one.

“This unique approach by the Victorian Government to fund community projects has certainly generated a lot of interest and excitement, and I’m delighted to see three excellent projects funded in Warrnambool,” he said.

“I was amazed at the quality and creativity of many of the nominated projects, and I’d like to congratulate everyone who put their idea forward.

“Warrnambool is Victoria’s most liveable city and all three successfully funded projects will help make our city even more vibrant, engaging and rich.”
