One of Australia’s most loved playgrounds is set for a major upgrade.

Member for Wannon Dan Tehan and Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack announced $1.45 million for Lake Pertobe as part of the Building Better Regions Fund.

Council will match this funding, for a total of $2.9 million.

The middle playground will receive a major overhaul with new features including a water play space, an indigenous play and soundscape area, all-abilities equipment, sensory games, an eight metre slide and south-west Victoria’s largest climbing net.

Other upgrades include new paths between key areas in the park and new toilet and change room facility across the road in McGennans Carpark.

These components were identified as part of the Lake Pertobe Master Plan, which was created based on extensive consultation with the community.

Warrnambool Mayor Tony Herbert said that the funding would turn a great park into something even better.

“To have this announcement so quickly after a master plan has been completed is fantastic,” he said.

“The playground has been loved to death and is in great need of an upgrade.

“Lake Pertobe is definitely our city’s most valuable asset. It’s the jewel in our crown. Everyone has had contact with Lake Pertobe.

“Lake Pertobe is probably one of the best family parks in Australia.”

Dan Tehan MP agreed, saying that Lake Pertobe was “the best playground in regional Australia.”

“My kids love coming to Warrnambool because they can come to Lake Pertobe and play,” he said.

“We’ve got to make sure, as with everything, that we continue to invest in and upgrade facilities.

“I know families across the Warrnambool region will be incredibly happy with this announcement, because I don’t know a family that hasn’t brought their kids here to play at Lake Pertobe.”

Work will commence within 60 days of federal funds being received, and will be completed within two years.
