Winners of the inaugural Warrnambool Building Design Awards were announced on Monday night at a presentation held in the Lighthouse Studio.
Awards were presented in four categories and along with awards adjudicated by a panel of judges each category had a people’s choice award.
The winners were:
Best Commercial/Community Development
Judges’ selection: Guyetts Funeral Home
People’s choice: St John’s Primary School
Best Renovation, Restoration or Extension
Judges’ selection: 6 Milloo Place
People’s choice: 6 Milloo Place
Best Residential (single dwelling)
Judges’ selection: 348 Caramut Road
People’s choice: 98 Davis Street
Best Residential (multiple dwelling)
Judges’ selection: Waterfront Apartments
People’s choice: Waterfront Apartments
Warrnambool Mayor Cr Kylie Gaston said the buildings featured in the nominations were all of high quality and demonstrated a creative use of space and materials.
“They all provide inspiration for anyone building or considering a renovation,” Cr Gaston said.
“The adaptive re-use of older buildings demonstrated that it is possible to retain the character of older structures yet have them function beautifully in the 21st century.
“And the contemporary buildings showed that our builders and architects are at the cutting edge of design and construction.
“Our judging panel was really impressed by the quality of work.
“We hope to see more of it!”
The awards were developed by Council’s Landscape Development Advisory Committee which comprised Cr Gaston, Trish Blakeslee, Fiona Golding, Glenistair Hancock, Shiva Malekfarnoud, Donna Monaghan, James Tait, Leanne Williams, Kerry Worland.
The judging panel comprised:
• Ms Kerri Worland(Member, City Landscape and Development Advisory Committee);
• Ms Jodie McNamara (Coordinator City Strategy & Renewal, Warrnambool City Council);
• Ms Julie Lancashire (Director, Urban Design and Management Pty Ltd, and member of the Victorian Planning and Environment Law Association); and,
• Mr Gareth Hately (Manager of Planning and Building, Municipal Association of Victoria).
To be eligible the property or development had to be located in the Warrnambool municipality, have been completed not more than five years ago or have been completed, occupied or ready for occupation by June 30 this year.
